Despite fears that a sudden influx of workers related to the shale development boom in eastern Ohio could lead to a housing shortage, researchers with the C. William Swank Program in Rural-Urban Policy at Ohio State University say the issue appears to be a manageable one.

Amanda Weinstein, AEDE 2013 PhD graduate, was recently awarded the M. Jarvin Emerson Student Paper Competition Award for her paper, “Labor Market Restructuring in the Shale Boom”, at the 2013 Mid-Continent Regional Science Association (MCRSA) Conference in Kansas City, Missouri.

Douglas Southgate, professor of Agricultural, Environmental and Development Economics, has been named associate director of the Subsurface Energy Resource Center (SERC) at OSU, effective July 1, 2012. Jeffrey Daniels, professor in the School of Earth Sciences, will serve as director.
The center, established in 2011, serves as a unbiased source of experts in the area of underground energy sources and related environmental and socioeconomics issues for citizens, businesses, and policymakers.

Economic impacts of development of oil and gas resources from Ohio's Marcellus and Utica shale is the focus of collaborative research, led by Cleveland State University’s Center for Economic Development, along with OSU’s Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics and petroleum engineers at Marietta College. The Ohio Chamber of Commerce commissioned the study for the Ohio Shale Coalition. A report is expected to be issued by the end of 2011.
