New research by Samantha Sekar, a former AEDE graduate student, and Professor Brent Sohngen finds that state-level implementation of renewable portfolio standards (RPS) in the U.S. reduced national carbon emissions by 4 percent in 2010, with more substantial reductions expected in the future.
AEDE doctoral student Wendong Zhang was recently named a Spring 2014 Ohio State Presidential Fellow. This fellowship is the most prestigious award given by the Ohio State Graduate School and recognizes the outstanding scholarly accomplishments and potential of graduate students entering the final phase of their dissertation research. Zhang is the first graduate student from AEDE to receive the award.
For AEDE doctoral student Norma Gomez giving back to her home country of Colombia is a motivating factor for her academic studies. Gomez, who is advised by Dr. Alessandra Faggian, recently won a prestigious grant from the government of Colombia to conduct research on the value of the higher education systems in the country.
This year, four graduates of AEDE’s programs have been selected by Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences to receive alumni awards at a ceremony on March 1st at the Ohio Union. The alumni include Robert Hothem, Kevin Adams, Matthew Pullins, and Allison Specht.
On Friday, January 24th, AEDE celebrated the opening of its new Student Service Center with an open house for students, faculty, staff, and partners. The Student Service Center provides academic support services to all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in AEDE’s programs.
Beginning in January 2014, AEDE’s undergraduate and graduate students will be able to visit one location to get support for all of their academic needs. The AEDE Student Service Center, the first of its kind for the department, will be housed in Suite 249 of the Ag Admin building and will service enrolled and prospective students.
This year AEDE welcomes Dr. Mauricio Vaz Lobo Bittencourt as a visiting professor to the department. Bittencourt comes to AEDE from his home country of Brazil, where he is a full professor in the Department of Economics at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR).
The 2013 meeting of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA) will be held from August 4-6, 2013 in Washington D.C. AEDE will have a very strong presence at the gathering with more than two dozen faculty and students in attendance. AEDE faculty and graduate students will also present their research at a number of the meeting's events.
A faculty committee recently chose AEDE doctoral student James Goodenberger as the winner of the department’s 2013 award for best research paper. Additionally, the committee awarded doctoral student Imran Muhammad Chaudhry with an honorable mention prize.
Ohio State’s Environmental Policy Initiative, which is directed by AEDE's Dr. Brent Sohngen, has awarded three outstanding Ohio State doctoral students research grants for use during the summer of 2013. The grant funding will be used by the students for new research related to environmental policy.
