In the most recent issue of Choices, a publication of the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA), research by AEDE faculty member Brian Roe examining risk tolerance by U.S. farmers is featured. Roe found that farmers are less tolerant of risk than nonfarm business owners but are more tolerant than the general population.
While cropland values in Ohio increased in 2012 and 2013, they are expected to remain flat or even decline in 2014, Barry Ward recently said at the opening of the 2013-2014 Agricultural Policy and Outlook Conference Series.
With U.S. corn production forecast at a record 14 billion bushels, growers can expect to see futures prices stay above $4 per bushel for the time being, says AEDE's Matt Roberts. This record production is an increase of 1 percent from the projected 13.843 billion bushels per acre the U.S. Department of Agriculture forecast in its September report.
Recent research by Dr. Carl Zulauf, an agricultural economist at AEDE, shows that while on average U.S. farmers are older than the U.S. labor force, the farmers and the labor force are actually aging at a similar pace and in fact, U.S. farmers are aging somewhat more slowly.
