The 3MT is an academic competition for PhD students and master’s students pursuing a master’s thesis, to describe their research within three minutes, to a general audience. A competition was recently held to select a finalist to represent OSU at the regional Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) competition at which national representatives will be selected.  

 The theory of sustainability was developed with a global framework in mind.    

“The earth is a shared system with many interacting parts, so it isn't possible to consider any action to address sustainability in isolation," said Elena Irwin, distinguished professor of food, agricultural and environmental sciences in
economics and sustainability and faculty director at Ohio State’s Sustainability Institute (SI).      
 

Kolesen McCoy thought sports would be his ticket to success. But then he had a change of heart, quit varsity soccer, and joined the student organization Future Farmers of America (FFA), known today as the National FFA Organization.  As he embraced the leadership and educational experiences offered, he took on leadership roles, first as an officer for his home state of Ohio, and then most recently, as president of the national organization which necessitated him taking a year off from college to serve in the role.

In the midst of cascading crises from climate change to biodiversity loss and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Earth Leadership Program – the global successor to the renowned Leopold Leadership Program, now in partnership with Future Earth – has announced its 2021-22 North American cohort.

Master Gardener Volunteers from across Ohio grew nearly 80,000 pounds of produce in 2020 statewide and donated it all to 101 food pantries in cities and towns across the state.

A new Econometrics course was posted on the Econometrics Academy website and YouTube channel.  This is a master’s level Econometrics course taught with Stata or R.  Topics include multiple linear regression, regression inference, heteroscedasticity, indicator variables, panel data models, instrumental variables, probit and logit models, and more. Each topic has a video with lecture material and then a video with Stata or R estimating the models.

This "green" option is more expensive than originally thought, study shows

Bringing higher rates of unemployment and poverty, the pandemic has also pushed more people into a struggle to buy the basics, including food. 

Organizers of the 2020 Agricultural Policy and Outlook Conference hosted by the Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics (AEDE) at The Ohio State University, say the aim of this year’s conference is to offer much-needed insight to those involved in the agricultural industry during a time marked with so much global uncertainty. Past attendees, ranging from producers to consumers and agribusinesses leaders to elected officials, say the annual conference provides information and outlooks that influence their businesses and decision-making processes. 

According to “The Impact of COVID-19 on Consumer Food Waste” published in the Applied Economics Perspectives & Policy’s special issue on COVID-19, researchers say in July 2020, more than a quarter of respondents had increased refrigerated storage capacity and more than 10 % had increased frozen storage capacity since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. An Increase in food storage provides a more immediate option for preserving food, but may so promote stockpiling that could lead to waste in the future.

A new pilot study deepens understanding of behaviors surrounding consumption of leftovers in the U.S., suggesting that reducing meal sizes and making leftovers more appealing could help reduce food waste. Brian Roe of Ohio State University, Columbus, and colleagues present these findings in the open-access journal PLOS ONE on September 9, 2020.
