I am an environmental economist who focuses on methods and applications for the valuation of environmental and natural resources. My recent research has looked at the impacts of harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie, the ongoing impacts of the BP/Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and the impacts of marine debris on southern California beaches. I received my PhD in environmental and resource economics from the University of Maryland in 1995. After receiving my PhD, I spent five years on the faculty of East Carolina University in eastern North Carolina before joining Ohio State in the Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics in 2000.
As a first-generation college student, I have first-hand knowledge of the impact that faculty and staff can have on a student’s life experience. This led me to a desire to pay-it-forward by supporting the work of faculty and staff through academic leadership. In 2010 I became the Chair of AEDE and served in that capacity for 13 years (three terms). During that time, I focused on building and supporting a diverse faculty and encouraging and supporting faculty and staff in the creation of interdisciplinary efforts at the University; including the highly successful Environment, Economy, Development, and Sustainability major (a partnership between AEDE and SENR), the OSU STEAM Factory, and the Sustainable and Resilient Economy Discovery Theme Initiative which eventually became the OSU Sustainability Institute.
In 2019, I was named the Dean’s Chair for Transformative Initiatives. In the Dean’s Chair I co-founded the CFAES Knowledge Exchange (kx.osu.edu), a research integration, translation, and communications unit designed to get research into the hands of those who can use the tools and findings more efficiently and in easier to understand formats.
In July of 2024, I was asked to serve as the Director of the School of Environment and Natural Resources bringing together my passions for supporting faculty, staff, and students, integrating teaching and research across disciplines, and using applied research to solve complex environmental and natural resource challenges to the betterment of society.
