Douglas Southgate

An economist with a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin, Douglas Southgate retired from Ohio State University in 2015 after serving 35 years as a professor of agricultural, environmental, and development economics.  Among the books and peer-reviewed articles he has written or coauthored are The World Food Economy (John Wiley, 2011),Globalized Fruit, Local Entrepreneurs (Pennsylvania, 2016), and Reversing Deforestation (Stanford, 2024).  Professor Southgate was a Fulbright Research Fellow in Ecuador in 1987 and returned to the country in 1990 for a three-year assignment with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).  He has consulted for USAID as well as the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the Ford Foundation in eighteen Latin American, Caribbean, and African nations.  Professor Southgate served on the Tropical Ecosystems Directorate of the U.S. Man and the Biosphere Program and directed Ohio State’s Latin American Studies Program.  For four years ending with his retirement, he was the associate director of the university’s Subsurface Energy Resource Center, which was established in 2011 in response to shale energy development in eastern Ohio.
