    Elena Irwin, distinguished professor of food, agricultural, and environmental sciences in economics and sustainability and faculty director of the Sustainability Institute at Ohio State, has been selected as a 2022 Fellow of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE), the association’s highest honor. Fellows are recognized for their outstanding contributions to the advancement of the profession of environmental and resource economics.

    Students receive more than $60,000 in departmental scholarships

    This year the Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics (AEDE) awarded 25 students majoring in Agribusiness and Applied Economics (AAE) more than $60,000 in scholarships, which is part of the close to $3 million in scholarships given to students throughout the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES). These scholarships make a meaningful impact in keeping college affordable for students as Ohio State works towards offering a debt-free bachelor's degree within the next decade.

    How will the invasion of Ukraine affect U.S. agriculture?

    The shock to global commodity markets following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is expected to be the largest in the post-war period, and certainly since the oil crisis of the 1970s.  Over the past 30 year, the two countries have become major agricultural exporters, accounting for a quarter of global grains trade in the 2021-22 season (International Grains Council, March 9, 2022).  Across key commodities, they account for a 34, 18, 27 and 75 percent share of volume traded of world wheat, corn, barley, and sunflower oil respectively (International Food Policy Research Institute, February 24, 20

  8. Meat industry not threatened by plant-based alternatives, study suggests

    At least for now, there is no reason for the traditional meat industry to have much of a beef with producers of plant-based burgers and other meat alternatives, new research suggests. 

    The study showed that while sales and market share of new-generation plant-based meat alternatives have grown in recent years, those gains haven’t translated into reduced consumer spending on animal meat products.
