AEDE is proud to share that Professor Brian Roe has been elected to serve a term as President of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association. Brian is the Fred N. VanBuren Professor of Farm Management, was chosen as an AAEA Fellow, served as an editor of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, and leads major research and policy initiatives on sustainable food systems.

The Columbus Metropolitan Club recently hosted a community panel discussion focused on central Ohio’s growing circular economy. AEDE Professor Elena Irwin spoke on the panel, describing “doughnut economics” – providing for humanity’s needs within finite planetary boundaries and resources – with fellow panelists from Advanced Drainage Systems, Compost Clubhouse, and Rumpke Waste & Recycling.

COLUMBUS OH, A policy brief just released by The C. William Swank Program in Rural-Urban Policy attempts to answer the question of why some rural communities thrive and others might lag behind by examining two rural-Ohio success stories: Holmes and Mercer Counties. Both Holmes and Mercer Counties have fared better than the average rural Ohio or rural U.S., even though both counties faced structural disadvantages.

AEDE graduate students had the opportunity this past week, March 21–22, to present at the Midwest Economics Association's annual meeting in Chicago, IL. This annual meeting is an opportunity for midwest economists to expose their work and communicate with each other face-to-face.
The Midwest Economics Association (MEA), a non-profit organization whose purpose is the advancement of economic knowledge and the economics profession, hosted the meeting.

The new 2022 Census of Agriculture data shows the number of farms in Ohio declined by 2.3% and in land in farms declined by 6.4% between 2002 and 2022. One number that is concerning to agricultural stakeholders in Ohio is the loss of 931,089 acres in land in farms in Ohio in the last twenty years.
The question is how much of the agricultural land in Ohio was lost to development?
