[COLUMBUS] Khyati Malik, a PhD candidate in the Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics at Ohio State, was awarded the Anthony Grano Fellowship Award for 2025. The award, presented by the AAEA Trust Committee and the AAEA Executive Board, is aimed to support her interest in agricultural policy and the policy formation process.
The program honors Dr. Anthony Grano’s legacy by fostering objective, research-driven contributions to agricultural policy while supporting the professional growth of emerging scholars in the field.
The application process involved submitting a comprehensive package, including a statement of interest outlining Malik’s motivation, research focus, and how the fellowship aligns with her academic and professional goals.
“My job market paper, which addresses incentivizing soil carbon sequestration practices to mitigate climate change while maintaining agricultural productivity, played a key role in showcasing my commitment to applying economics to policy research,” said Malik. “I also provided a resume detailing my experience in agricultural economics and policy.”
The Anthony Grano Fellowship provides graduate students in agricultural economics with a unique opportunity to engage directly with the agricultural policy-making process. As a recipient, Malik will participate in a series of meetings with policymakers, agricultural organizations, and public officials in Washington, D.C. Through these interactions, fellows gain valuable insights into how economic research informs policy decisions and develop a deeper understanding of the policy-making landscape.
“These meetings will align with my research interests and provide opportunities to discuss the intersection of climate change mitigation and agricultural productivity,” said Malik. “I am especially interested in understanding how policy can support the adoption of practices like no-till, conservation tillage and cover cropping.”
Malik’s research interest is at the intersection of environmental, energy and agricultural economics with a focus on regional issues and policy. Beyond academia, she enjoys immersing herself in the world through travel, books and the simple act of observing and absorbing the richness of life. She also enjoys watching professional tennis.
