In Memoriam: Thomas Taylor Stout, AEDE Professor Emeritus and Undergraduate Program Scholarship Funder

Thomas Taylor Stout, AEDE Professor Emeritus, passed away on April 16, 2016 at the age of 86 in Columbus, Ohio.

Professor Stout had a long career studying and teaching at Ohio State. Born in Columbus but raised in Indiana and Maryland, he earned his BS in 1952, his MS in 1953, and his PhD in 1956, all from Ohio State. His masters and doctorate degrees were in agricultural economics and, after completing a short teaching stint at Purdue University, he began teaching at AEDE in 1960 and remained until his retirement in 1999.

During his career he took leave from Ohio State to serve as a senior staff economist on the U.S. President’s Council of Economic Advisors and later as an agricultural economist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economics Research Service.

While at AEDE, he served as chair of both the undergraduate program and the graduate program. He also oversaw student clubs in the department and received numerous awards, including the recognition of Outstanding Service to Students. He taught a wide range of courses, focusing on subjects such as marketing, policy, and the livestock meat industry. His research focused on technological change in U.S. agriculture, the American livestock market, and price forecasting, among other topics. He was a member of the American and Canadian agricultural economics associations.

Since 1986, he supported Agribusiness and Applied Economics undergraduate students at Ohio State through the W.B. and T. T. Stout Agricultural Economics Scholarship Fund.

Family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 2016 at Schoedinger Northwest Chapel located at 1740 Zollinger Road in Upper Arlington. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at Schoedinger Circleville Chapel located at 151 East Main Street in Circleville.
