AEDE is proud to share that Professor Brian Roe has been elected to serve a term as President of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association. Brian is the Fred N. VanBuren Professor of Farm Management, was chosen as an AAEA Fellow, served as an editor of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, and leads major research and policy initiatives on sustainable food systems.
Brian is an experienced champion of research, teaching, and outreach. He pointed out in his statement for the election that a “larger and more diverse pipeline of students with exposure to and interests in applying economics to solve agricultural, development, environmental, food and consumer, natural resource, regional, rural, and associated business problems.” He plans initiatives for AAEA from K12 onward to broaden and deepen that pipeline.
He plans to promote initiatives that will share applied economics with diverse and widespread youth organizations like 4H, attracting more students to applied economics departments across the country. He will also work within AAEA to expand mentoring programs and diversify the activities that invite undergraduates to engage with AAEA. Finally, he will support efforts to ensure that AAEA is a welcoming professional home for all engaged in the work we do.
Upon hearing the news, Brian shared: “I am humbled by the opportunity to serve the AAEA over the coming years and motivated to give back to an Association that has been pivotal to my own professional development and the development and professional success of many generations of applied economists.”
