Columbus, Ohio – Dr. Abdoul Sam, Professor and Director of Graduate Studies for Ohio State’s Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics, recently completed a series of significant academic engagements in two continents. As part of the 2023 Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow Program, Dr. Sam spent two weeks this past June at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, where he taught econometrics to graduate students and lecturers, mentored doctoral researchers, and agreed to serve as an external member on several dissertation committees.
In May, Dr. Sam was also invited to deliver two major lectures on “Corporate Environmentalism and Decarbonization” at National Quemoy University and Tunghai University in Taiwan. Sponsored and funded by the Eurasia Foundation, these lectures explored the economic and strategic challenges of decarbonization for businesses, offering insights on integrating sustainability into business models while maintaining profitability and competitiveness.
“It was a privilege to engage with students and faculty in both Taiwan and Nigeria,” said Dr. Sam. “The issues of decarbonization and sustainable economic development are critical challenges that demand collaborative solutions involving industries and governments.”
Dr. Sam’s scholarly interests center on the use of parametric and nonparametric econometrics to explore substantive economic issues primarily in environmental economics and development economics. His research in environmental economics explores the determinants, effects, and effectiveness of voluntary pollution reduction programs, which have become an important element of the environmental protection toolkit in the U.S. and many other countries.
