Ando is part of the research team receiving 2025 AERE Publications of Enduring Quality

May. 30, 2025

COLUMUBS - Dr. Amy Ando, Professor and Chair of the Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics Department, was a coauthor of the paper recognized by the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE) for this year’s Publications of Enduring Quality Award.

The 1998 Science publication, “Species Distributions, Land Values and Efficient Conservation,” was written by Ando with Ando Jeffrey Camm, University of Cincinnati; Stephen Polasky, Oregon State University; and Andrew Solow, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

The award was announced during the Summer Conference in Santa Ana Pueblo, NM on Thursday, May 29.

According to the nomination letter “This paper makes an important but simple economic point that had been overlooked by researchers and practitioners in land and species conservation: Optimization needs to consider heterogeneous costs as well as benefits. This groundbreaking work is one of the most highly cited papers in environmental economics and conservation science, laying a critical foundation for integrating cost discrepancy into economic analysis while demonstrating the power of interdisciplinary collaboration.”

The committee additionally notes "Perhaps even more important than the article’s substantial scholarly impact is that it helped change the dialogue on conservation strategy in non profit and policy communities, such as the Conservation Reserve Program. It has, in fact, helped conservation agents use their limited resources to accomplish more environmental goals."

Congratulations to all the authors!
