Transformative. Distinguished. Innovative. Compassionate. Engaging. These are just some of the words colleagues and students use to describe Sathya Gopalakrishnan, an associate professor in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics (AEDE).
Twenty-one researchers have been named to the first cohort for the GRO Academy
Dr. Gopalakrishnan says that when she and 11 junior faculty members founded The Steam Factory in 2012, their goal was to create a grass-roots network of faculty, post-docs, and other like-minded professors across Ohio State to engage in creative and interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and dissemination of science.
“When we started, we were just trying to have fun and meet other researchers from across the university,” said Gopalakrishnan. "It really did not feel like service or work really."
The theory of sustainability was developed with a global framework in mind.
“The earth is a shared system with many interacting parts, so it isn't possible to consider any action to address sustainability in isolation," said Elena Irwin, distinguished professor of food, agricultural and environmental sciences in economics and sustainability and faculty director at Ohio State’s Sustainability Institute (SI).
In the midst of cascading crises from climate change to biodiversity loss and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Earth Leadership Program – the global successor to the renowned Leopold Leadership Program, now in partnership with Future Earth – has announced its 2021-22 North American cohort.
Universities are the largest repositories of domain-specific expertise, diverse talent and human capital. Whereas formal structured coursework typically progresses linearly, innovation occurs through unexpected connections across different concepts that occur largely outside formal structured environments.
