Van Buren Lecture: Nathan Hendricks on Agricultural Subsidies
Location: Agriculture Administration Building room 250A.
The United States spent roughly $8 billion annually between 2000 and 2013 on agricultural commodity subsidies. Nathan Hendricks, Associate Professor from Kansas State University, will delve into the key questions concerns these subsidies. Dr. Hendricks will address key concerns that many constituencies hold about these federal funds such as: who are the prime beneficiaries of subsidies – farmers or their landlords? and are certain regions of the country favored more than others? Hendricks leverages county level payment and farmland rental price data from USDA to explore this question and uses a novel statistical approach to overcome difficulties faced by previous researchers to ensure the estimates are correctly capturing the amount of the subsidies captured by the farmer versus the landlord. Join us at 10am for a reception with the speaker featuring drinks and snacks.
