Extension/Outreach: Measuring the Economic Contribution of Agriculture in Ohio: An Educational and Informative Workshop

The goals of the workshop are:

  • Introduction to economic contribution analysis and efforts to standardize procedures across states - Guest Speaker Leah English from the University of Arkansas
  • Discuss best practices for measuring economic contributions of the agricultural sector - Guest Speaker Professor Emeritus Thomas Johnson, the Frank Miller Professor of Agricultural and Applied Economics and Professor in the Harry S Truman School of Public Affairs, University of Missouri.  Johnson is Director of Rural Policy Research Institute’s Analytic and Academic Programs. 
  • Discuss Ohio Contribution Analysis and open discussion

Thomas G. Johnson, Professor Emeritus

Dr. Thomas G. Johnson is professor emeritus at the University of Missouri. He formerly had a joint appointment as the Frank Miller Professor of Agricultural and Applied Economics, and professor in the Harry S Truman School of Public Affairs at the University of Missouri. His recent research areas include the causes and consequence of rural economic development, fiscal and economic impact analysis, renewable energy, rural entrepreneurship, and rural wealth creation. He has studied rural policy issues in Canada, Korea, and several European countries. He is a founding member of the International Comparative Rural Policy Studies Consortium. He is the 2002 Fellow of the Southern Regional Science Association, 2006 recipient of the Outstanding Contribution through Economics Award from the Northeast Agricultural and Resource Economics Association, and recipient of the USDA Undersecretary’s Group Honor Award for Excellence in 2007, and Abraham Lincoln Honor Award in 2015. Professor Johnson has published over 200 articles, papers, and book chapters and has co-authored or co-edited 6 books.

Leah English, Program Associate

Leah English is a Program Associate at the Center for Agricultural and Rural Sustainability (CARS), Division of Agriculture, University of Arkansas System. CARS researchers regularly assess agriculture’s economic contribution to the Arkansas economy. The contribution is reported in terms of number of jobs, labor income and value-added.
