    Andrew Dillan, Assistant Professor, Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics, Michigan State University will discuss his research on how social networks are an important mechanism for diffusing information when formal institutions are missing.  There may be distributional consequences from targeting only central nodes in a network. After implementing a social network census, one of three village-level treatments determined which treated nodes in the village received information about composting: random assignment, nodes with the highest degree, or nodes with high betweenness.

    Sofia Berto Villas-Boas, Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, will present "Retail Mergers and Food Prices".  The impact of a merger in the French supermarket industry on food prices will be discussed.  Villas-Boas' work analyzes the impact of a merger in the French supermarket industry on food prices. Using consumer panel data, we compare the changes in prices for merging and rival firms in affected and comparison markets.

    Becca Jablonski, Assistant Professor and Food Systems Extension Economist, Department of Agricultural & Resources Economics at Colorado State University will discuss her research on how local food projects reveal small positive community economic impacts.  Between 2009-2014 the U.S. Department of Agriculture funded over 40,000 local food projects primarily intended to support rural economic development and farm viability. Location: Agriculture Administration Building room 250A.  The seminar is co-hosted by the C. William Swank Program in Rural-Urban Policy.
