A New Mix of Private and Public: How Well Might the U.S. Food Safety Modernization Act Work?

Julie A. Caswell, Professor in the Department of Resource Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and current President of the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association, will present on October 14th in Room 105 of the Agricultural Administration Building (2120 Fyffe Road) as part of the AEDE Applied Economics Seminar Series. Her presentation will focus on her recent research: "A New Mix of Private and Public: How Well Might the U.S. Food Safety Modernization Act Work?"

Abstract: The Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011 (FSMA) is introducing comprehensive changes to the regulation of domestic and imported foods under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. These changes are a new mix of private responsibilities for preventative controls, use of third party certification as an assurance tool, and new regulatory oversight. How will the industrial organization of food safety markets influence how well FSMA may work, particularly for the fresh produce industry?
