Letter from the department chair...

Welcome to the Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Development Economics (AEDE) at The Ohio State University, which U.S. News and World Report ranks 16th among U.S. public universities. Housed in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CFAES), AEDE has a highly collegial group of twenty-four faculty members who provide world-class teaching, research, and outreach in applied economics.  Our work tackles thorny problems and prepares future leaders in the areas of food, agriculture, and agribusiness; environmental and natural resource sustainability; trade and development; and community and regional economics.

How can farms and agribusinesses navigate change and uncertainty in labor markets and global prices? How can we stabilize population and incomes in rural areas? What roles can forests and farms play in reducing the threat of future environmental crises? What changes in global and regional agriculture can improve nutrition and health in developing countries? Faculty in AEDE carry out award-winning research and engage in active extension and outreach to help policymakers and stakeholders answer pressing questions like these.

Compelling AEDE academic programs prepare undergraduate and graduate students to be leaders themselves in our areas of expertise. Our undergraduate majors (Agribusiness and Applied Economics, Environment, Economy, Development, and Sustainability) give students knowledge and analytical skills for exciting careers in business, government, and non-profits, with small classes and engaged supportive advising. Our one-year Master of Applied Economics accelerates students into professional careers with advanced data analysis and economic theory. Finally, students in our top-ranked PhD program work themselves on cutting-edge research to become the next wave of leading scholars, policy makers, and analysts in the world of agriculture, environment, and development.

We are a high-powered department with a welcoming environment, nestled into the dynamic Columbus area where urban amenities meet rural and natural beauty. If you have questions, would like more information, or are ready to join us, reach out to us at aede@osu.edu or 614-292-7911. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Amy W. Ando
