Letter from the Department Chair
Welcome to the Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Development Economics (AEDE) at The Ohio State University.
Ohio State, the 18th ranked U.S. public university according to U.S. News and World Report, is located in Columbus, Ohio, the 16th most populated city in the U.S. according to the 2000 U.S. census. But enough about the town and OSU, you’re here to learn about our department. COVID-19 Update.
Housed in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, AEDE currently has twenty two world-class faculty members and administers highly respected Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. programs. AEDE’s faculty provide world-class teaching, research and outreach in applied economics, with concentrations in the areas of agricultural economics and agribusiness, environmental and resource economics, international and development economics, and regional and urban economics.
Of the 66 Ohio State programs that appeared in the recent National Research Council's Data-Based Assessment of Research-Doctorate Programs in the United States AEDE ranked as the top program in the U.S. in Agricultural and Resource Economics using the regression based ranking calculation: A prestigious honor*. AEDE is the only Ohio State program to earn a top ranking in either of the two reported ranking methods.
AEDE scored particularly well, when compared to other departments around the country, in the percentage of minority faculty (ranked 1st ), the average number of PhD students graduated per year (2nd), the average GRE score (3rd), the percentage of first year students with external funding (6th), the percentage of PhD students completing within 6 years (7th) and the average number of publications per faculty member (7th).
While the rankings reflect the quality of our research and PhD programs, they are a tribute to the hard work of our faculty, our dedicated staff, our outstanding students and our past leaders who have set in place forward-looking undergraduate and graduate programs that go beyond the classroom to integrate teaching, research and outreach. The National Research Council rankings don't just reflect our past successes but they provide a glimpse of what a high quality department of applied economists adds to Ohio State's journey from excellence to eminence.
