VanBuren Lecture - 2000

Lecturer Dr. Marshall A. Martin is Professor of Agricultural Economics at Purdue University and Associate Department Head. 

Professor Martin's research interests are in the areas of agricultural policy and technology assessment, especially pesticide use and biotechnology. He has co-authored two books, The Future of Bovine Somatotropin in the European Union (1996) and Politicas Comerciales Internacionales Agrarias (1991), and co-edited two books, Agricultural Biotechnology: Issues and Choices (1991) and Analysis of Food and Agricultural Policies for the Eighties (1980). Recent publications include: "The Economics of Bt Corn: Valuing the Protection from European Corn Borer", Review of Agricultural Economics (1999), "The Economics of Bt Corn: Adoption Implications", ID-219 Purdue Extension Bulletin (1998), and "Consumers and the Dairy Growth Hormone: Opportunity and Controversy", International Advances in Economics Research (1995).   Professor Martin and his students have received research awards from Purdue University and the American Agricultural Economics Association.  He teaches an undergraduate course in agricultural policy. He is the Director of the Center for Agricultural Policy and Technology Assessment, Departmental Extension Coordinator, Chair of the Purdue University Agricultural Biotechnology Task Force, and a member of the USDA Agricultural Biotechnology Advisory Committee. He is President of the Purdue University Band Advisory Board and a member of the Board of Directors of the Agricultural Alumni Seed Improvement Association. Dr. Martin has had extensive experience in Latin America and Europe. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Revista Argentina de Economía Agraria. He is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.
