Our Mission

In the spring of 1999, The Ohio State University established an Environmental Policy Initiative (EPI). This Initiative aims to stimulate and focus systematic collaboration in environmental policy, through research, undergraduate and graduate education, communication with the policy community, and communication with the national and international community of scholars in environmental policy. EPI seeks to become a focal point for scholars in environmental policy research, nationally and internationally.

It is founded upon an impressive record of environmental policy research, teaching, and outreach within the colleges and departments at OSU. Membership is drawn from faculty, professional staff, and graduate students in the social and behavioral sciences, the humanities, agriculture, natural resources, engineering, and planning.

Environmental policy research applies the principles of many disciplines to resolve real world problems confronted by decision-makers in the private and public sectors. It seeks to inform the policy process, to help define the emerging environmental policy agenda, and to participate in developing new policy paradigms for an interconnected world.

The Environmental Policy Initiative will focus initially on three substantive policy areas:

1. Air, Water, and Land Quality Issues

  • Air and Water Pollution Control
  • Watershed Protection
  • Land Use and Settlement Patterns
  • Rural-Urban Issues

2. Human and Social Concerns

  • Environmental Attitudes and Values
  • Benefits and Costs of Environmental Policies
  • Risk Assessment and Management

3. Sustainability Issues

  • Habitat Protection
  • Biodiversity
  • Agroecology
