Some GIS Terminology
Map feature: fundamental unit of a GIS database
points, lines, polygons (or areas)
Attribute data: information associated with the map features
Geographic file: stores both the spatial and attribute data for a set of map features
Some GIS Terminology
Map layer: a set of map features and attribute data that is displayed in GIS.
Map scale: ratio of the size of the map feature to the size of the actual object.
1:10,000 is a smaller map scale than 1:100
Some Community 2020 Terms
Map window: displays the electronic map
Dataview: displays the data in a table
Layout: formal presentation of maps and data in a single window
