Congestion
n Low density, sprawl patterns of development
necessitate more driving, which leads  to congestion
n Between 1982-97, population increased an average of 22% in
American metro areas, but the amount that individuals are
driving has increased by 70% on average.
n In Columbus: 22% increase in population between 1982-1997
and 93% increase in the average amount of time spent driving
per individual.
n Factors that contribute to increased driving:
n Increase in trip length (34%)
n Increase in trips taken (18%)
n Switch from non-car to car transportation (17%)
n Decrease in vehicle occupancy (17%)
