EXTENSION PROGRAM IN NATURAL RESOURCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL ECONOMICS

Personnel: Brent Sohngen, Department of Agricultural Economics, The Ohio State University

Mission: The mission of this program incorporates three main objectives –

1) To provide timely information to extension personnel and Ohio citizens.
2) To teach economic concepts of environmental and natural resource issues.
3) To link sound scientific research to applied natural resource policy and management issues.

Scope of Work:

The program in Natural Resource and Environmental Economics is a new program within extension at The Ohio State University. Natural resource and environmental economics is a field that applies the concepts and principles of economic efficiency to a host of issues, including renewable and non-renewable resources, externalities and off-site impacts, and other environmental issues. Examples of issues include non-point source pollution, adoption of technologies for reducing pollution levels, watershed management, land-use and land-cover change, efficient use of renewable resources, optimal rates of environmental pollution control, and efficient mechanisms for pollution control.

One of the roles of extension is to provide sound scientific information to the community at-large, either through the established extension mechanisms, through state or local agencies, or through alternative institutions established to provide information and guidance in local decision-making. As such, this program will provide scientific information on selected topics that fall under the purview of natural resource and environmental economics. This program will provide information in several different formats:
