Solomon

SOLOMON is a high-performance server for computationally-intensive research within AEDE. It has two dual core 2.4GHz AMD Opteron processors and 8GB of RAM. It uses Windows 2003 Server as its OS, and it is used via Microsoft Terminal Services.

In order to access SOLOMON , you must be on an AEDE-owned computer, and it must be connecting from within Ag Admin. You cannot use your own personal computer to log on to SOLOMON, and you cannot log on from home.

Moving files to and from SOLOMON : In order to move files to or from SOLOMON , you must be given permission on the server itself. You must contact Dr. Roberts. A share will be created in your name that you can use to store files and programs. You will be able to access this share from windows explorer by typing \\solomon\(username) where username is your OSU username, such as smith.1, in the windows explorer address bar. You can then copy/paste files or perform whatever other file operations needed.

Using SOLOMON : In order to use SOLOMON, you must have a terminal services client installed:

--If you are using Windows XP, you have an application called 'Remote Desktop' which fulfills this functionality. It is located at START->ALL PROGRAMS->ACCESSORIES -> COMMUNICATIONS->REMOTE DESKTOP.

--If you are using Windows 2000, you must download the Terminal Services client from Microsoft. Go to this link and follow directions.

Start this program. You will be greeted with a Windows login screen; type SOLOMON in the computer name box and click "connect". You will then see another login screen. Enter your OSU user name and password and make sure that the "Log on to:" box says CFAES. Hit ok. You will be greeted with a windows desktop that has a small bar that says "solomon" across the top. This is the SOLOMON desktop. That bar takes you back to your own local desktop, either by clicking on the minimize or reduce buttons. Clicking on the close button (the 'X') will close your connection to SOLOMON but it will leave your desktop running. This is crucial if you are running applications. If you close using the 'X' the application will continue to run on SAMSON, but you will be occupying one of only five logins available. If you are not running an application and need to stop using SOLOMON, then use START->LOG OUT to free up one of the five logins. If you are finished with your session, please log out! If a restart of the server is required, and you have been logged in for days without any activity or applications running, I will forcibly log you out, which will lose any information on your desktop. Consider yourself warned.

Software: Currently SOLOMON has the following software:

  • GAMS
  • MATLAB
  • Cygwin (UNIX utilities for Windows)

If you need other software, contact Dr. Roberts. Do NOT install any other software without our permission. Doing so will result in immediate revocation of privileges on SOLOMON.
