Primary research interests focus on agricultural trade and market analysis, especially the impact of policy reform on agricultural markets. He has developed a relationship and projects with German and Austrian researchers to study the effects of reforming the European Union 's Common Agricultural Policy. An offshoot of that work is studying the effect of E.U. trade policy reform on world market stability. He has recently established similar collaborative trade research relationships with Chilean scientists. Thompson's past research has included use of commodity futures markets as a risk management tool, agricultural policy analysis, economics of commodity advertising and promotion, and various applications of econometrics. Previously department chair (1990-98) and 15 years on the faculty at Michigan State University.
