Marv Batte's primary research interests are technology assessment, decision-making processes and structural change in the agricultural sector. Technology assessment research includes computer and information systems technologies, Internet use and e-commerce, precision farming technologies and organic production systems. His research also addresses consumer demand for certified organic foods and for foods differentiated as locally-grown or produced with other characteristics perceived by consumers to increase food quality or safety. Batte 's research is funded in part by grants from the National Research Initiative and the Higher Education Challenge Grant programs. Batte holds the Fred N. VanBuren Professorship in Farm Management and serves as the Director of the Center for Innovation-Based Enterprise. The Center provides market assessment, economic analysis, and business concept assistance for innovation-based and start-up enterprises with a primary focus on the agbiosciences. Batte was Interim Department Chair in 1998, Associate Chair from 1995-2008, and Graduate Studies Chair from 1995 to 1998.
