Alessandra Faggian is a Professor at the Ohio State University, AED Economics Department and co-editor of Papers in Regional Science.

Dr. Faggian’s research interests lie in the field of Regional and Urban Economics, Demography, Labour Economics and Economics of Education. Her publications cover a wide range of topics including migration, human capital, labour markets, creativity and local innovation and growth. She has co-authored 55 academic publications (of which 38 are in referred journals). Her articles appeared in journals such as Oxford Economics PapersCambridge Journal of Economics, Journal of Economic Geography, Feminist Economics, Geoforum, Regional Studies, Papers in Regional Science and the Journal of Regional Science. Her work has been cited over 1,200 times in Google Scholar and almost 450 times in ISI. Her 2005 article published in Regional Studies was ranked 10th among the most-cited articles between 2010 and 2013.

She is co-editor of Papers in Regional Science and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Regional Science and Regional Studies, Regional Science. In 2013, she was appointed by the European Commission as one five jurors to select the European Capital of Innovation 2014 (iCapital Award). 

In 2007 she was awarded the Moss Madden Memorial Medal by the Regional Science Association International: Irish and British section (RSAIBIS) for the best paper published in the year 2006. In 2008 she was awarded an ESRC Fellowship in conjunction with the Department of Education and Learning to investigate the impact of the introduction of higher education tuition fees in Northern Ireland. She has been Treasurer of the RSAIBIS between 2009 and 2012.  In 2010, she was elected councillor-at-large of the Regional Science Association International (RSAI). In 2012, she also became a member of the Board of Directors of the Western Regional Science Association (WRSA) and she was elected councillor-at-large for the North American Regional Science Council (NARSC).

Cristina Connolly, Kathryn Dotzel, Norma Gomez, Isha Rajbhandari and Wendong Zhang, all students in AEDE’s doctoral program, have been awarded travel funding from Ohio State’s Center for Urban and Regional Analysis (CURA) to present papers at upcoming national conferences in Washington D.C. and Atlanta, Georgia that focus on the study of regional science.
Kathryn Dotzel, a doctoral student studying under Alessandra Faggian at AEDE, is spending her summer interning at the USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS). She is working with a team of researchers to analyze the pilot results of the Rural Establishment Innovation Survey, which was launched for the first time in 2013, and examines business innovation in rural America.
The Ohio State University Board of Trustees recently approved the promotion of Dr. Alessandra Faggian to the rank of Professor and Dr. H. Allen Klaiber to the rank of Associate Professor. Congratulations to these outstanding AEDE faculty members!
Mark Partridge and Alessandra Faggian represented Ohio State at the International Regional, Urban, and Spatial Economics in China Conference held at Fudan University in June 2014. They both served as co-organizers of the conference and Partridge delivered the event's keynote address.
AEDE's Alessandra Faggian was recently chosen by the European Commission to serve as one of five judges for the European Capital of Innovation 2014 contest, which awards the iCapital prize. The contest, which grants the winning city 500,000 euros to commit to its innovation efforts, aims to create a network of cities who can share their innovation concepts for growing the Europe of the future.
Maintaining its strong presence in the field of regional economics, AEDE recently sent a dozen faculty members and doctoral students to Atlanta, Georgia for the 60th annual North American meeting of the Regional Science Association International (RSAI). Dr. Mark Partridge and Wendong Zhang received awards at the event.
This summer many AEDE faculty members travelled abroad for teaching and research collaboration opportunities. One country in particular, the People’s Republic of China, hosted visits from several AEDE faculty members working in the fields of development and regional economics.
