What is Agribusiness and Applied
Economics?
Agribusiness includes firms that produce, process,
distribute and sell food, fiber, and other bio-based products derived from
agricultural products. It also includes the management of natural resources.
Agribusiness and applied economics integrates
business and economic principles needed to manage, market, and finance
agribusiness firms in domestic and international markets as well as encourages
the appropriate use of natural resources.
High
School Preparation
All freshman applicants are considered within a competitive admission process
for Autumn, Winter, and Summer quarters for the Columbus campus. The primary
criteria for admission are the completion of the applicant's high school college
preparatory program and performance in that program.
Majoring in Agribusiness and Applied Economics
at Ohio State
Students may declare a major in agribusiness and applied economics any time
after admission to Ohio State. No conditions exist for admission to the major
except eligible academic standing at Ohio State. An overall average grade of C
or better is required for graduation. Direct admission to the major is also
possible and encouraged.
Experienced faculty members teach the courses in the major. In recent years,
faculty members have won over 20 teaching awards and written over 40 books and
multiple scientific research articles. Two-thirds of the faculty have
international agricultural experience. The faculty have doctorate degrees from
20 universities and more than 16 areas of specialization such as marketing,
management, and finance. Each student enrolled in the major is assigned a
faculty advisor.
General
Education Curriculum Requirements
Most students enter Undergraduate Student Academic Services
(USAS) upon enrolling at Ohio State and remain enrolled in USAS until they
have qualified for and have been accepted into their chose major and
college.
While enrolled in USAS, students begin taking courses which
will meet the General Education Curriculum (GEC) requirements. The GEC is a
body of courses designed to assure that each student becomes acquainted with
the basic areas of academic study. To meet the GEC requirements, credit
hours must be completed from the following eight areas of academic study:
writing and related skills; quantitative and logical skills; foreign
language and culture/international experience; social diversity in the
United States; natural science; social science; arts and humanities; and the
capstone experience.
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
Requirements in Major
As a student in agribusiness and applied economics, you will take 61 to 65
quarter credit hours of required and elective courses. A minor study area
outside of the major is required. The minor consists of an additional 20-25
credit hours selected from more than 80 available university-wide. Elective
courses comprise the remaining hours needed to complete the 190 credit hours
needed for graduation. An Honors Program is available for students who want to a
more individualized curriculum or a research orientation to explore the
possibility of graduate studies
