Financial Aid in AEDE Graduate ProgramsFor information on current cost of attendance, visit the Graduate Admissions website. Financial AssistanceProspective students are encouraged to apply early to maximize their funding opportunities. Three types of funding are available:
University Fellowships (application deadline: November 30 for international applicants; January 1 for U.S. applicants). University Fellowships are the most prestigious form of aid for graduate study at Ohio State University. The Graduate Studies Committee in AED Economics nominates students for Fellowships. Typically, 9 to 12 applicants to our program are offered these highly coveted awards per year. Fellowship students do not have any work commitments to the University or AED Economics. All Fellowship students receive a waiver of instructional and general fees, a monthly stipend, discounted rate parking passes, staff-level parking privileges, 80% subsidized health insurance, subsidized insurance for family members, and other benefits. Currently, Fellowship students in AED Economics receive a stipend of $19,944 per year plus benefits. Research and/or Teaching Associateships (application deadline: March 1) The department awards Graduate Associateships (GAs) to incoming and returning students. There are three types of GAs: Graduate Teaching Associateship (GTAs), Graduate Research Associateships (GRAs), and Graduate Administrative Associateship (GAAs). Most GA appointments in the department are half-time, requiring up to 20 hours of work per week. Teaching Associates (TAs) are employed directly by the department's graduate program and are assigned to work with an instructor, conducting recitations, running computer labs, grading papers, meeting one-on-one with students, or engaging in other teaching-related activities. Graduate Research Associates (GRAs) work directly for individual faculty and are funded out of grants; duties involve gathering and analyzing data, writing computer programs, writing and editing research reports, or other research-related activities. Graduate Administrative Associates (GAAs) may be employed directly by the department's graduate program or may be assigned directly to individual faculty; duties generally involve planning, coordination, or execution of programs related to teaching, research, or outreach. All GAs receive a waiver of instructional and general fees, a monthly stipend, discounted rate parking passes, staff-level parking privileges, 80% subsidized health insurance, subsidized insurance for family members, and other benefits. Currently, Ph.D. level GAs receive a stipend of around $15,000 (plus benefits) per year and M.S. level GAs receive a stipend of around $13,000 per year. Presidential, Minority, and other Fellowships Ohio State University and AED Economics award Presidential Fellowships for the dissertation (final) year of the program to selected Ph.D. students who have passed the Candidacy Examination and are engaged in dissertation research. Minority and special interest fellowships and support are also available. Other forms of aid are available for qualified students. Please check with the Graduate School for more information. Student Employment Students and spouses may be able to find jobs in the campus area. The Student Employment Office serves registered students and their spouses. The office solicits and receives information on jobs and places student applications with appropriate employers. Please note, Visa restrictions make it very difficult for foreign students to work in other than research or teaching associate positions. Loans for U.S. Students Nearly all full-time domestic graduate students are eligible for to $18,500 in federal loans each year.
